Personal Experience
I learned from experience of having a house fire that insurance will only pay for what you can prove. The insurance company will not do extra work or pay out if you can’t prove what you had. Having several name brand items in my house and telling the insurance company their only response was can you prove it? Name brand appliances and televisions, can you prove it?
Without proof the insurance company basically gave the bare necessities for each room and said they weren’t required to pay anymore unless I could prove it. Luckily after months of fighting and finding receipts from store where the items were registered I was able to prove a majority, but I didn’t know what ACV was. Come to find out my policy had a clause in it that said I receive Actual Cash Value which is the Replacement Cost Value (RCV) minus depreciation. So even though I could finally prove it the insurance company was still only going to have to pay pennies on the dollar.
What insurance don’t want you to know
People are told in the event of a disaster to take pictures of each room quickly. Do you know why? It’s so you can show some of the stuff you had in your house before the disaster happens.
The key word in that sentence is some that way the insurance company only has to pay SOME to you for coverage. Not ALL and most don’t know what all is and if all is enough?
